How to Prevent Common Plumbing Problems at Home

Most of the plumbing emergencies we get called to were preventable, and usually not by anything clever. They were preventable by someone noticing a small thing a few weeks earlier and doing something about it.

Here is what is actually worth your attention around the house.

In the kitchen

Keep fat and oil out of the sink. This is the single biggest cause of kitchen drain blockages. Warm oil goes down as a liquid, then cools and sets on the pipe wall a few metres along where you cannot see it. Every subsequent wash adds another layer. Pour cooled fat into a jar or the bin instead.

Be careful what goes in the disposal. Coffee grounds, rice, pasta and fibrous vegetable scraps all swell or clump. They are the things we find most often when we open a kitchen line.

Run hot water after washing up. Thirty seconds of genuinely hot water helps carry residual grease through the line rather than letting it settle in it.

In the bathroom

Use a drain strainer. Hair is the main cause of shower and basin blockages and a two dollar strainer stops most of it. Empty it rather than pushing the contents down.

Only flush the two things. Wet wipes are the worst offender in modern plumbing, including the ones labelled flushable. They do not break down the way toilet paper does. They catch on any imperfection in the pipe and then everything else catches on them. Cotton buds, sanitary products and dental floss all do the same.

Check around the toilet base occasionally. A slow leak at the base or the cistern connection can go unnoticed for months while it quietly damages the floor underneath.

Outside

Think about where you plant. Roots go looking for water and will find any weakness in a drainage line. Willows, figs and anything with an aggressive root system planted near the sewer line will eventually find it, particularly with older clay pipework. If a tree is already there, it is worth knowing where your drainage runs.

Keep gutters and stormwater clear. Blocked stormwater has to go somewhere, and in a Brisbane storm that is often against the house.

Know where your water meter and main shut-off are. Find them now, while nothing is wrong. If a pipe bursts, the difference between knowing and not knowing is the difference between a wet patch and a flooded house. Make sure whoever else lives there knows too.

Read your water bill

This is the most underrated leak detector you own. A bill that has jumped without any change in how you are using water usually means water is going somewhere it should not.

You can check yourself in about an hour. Turn off every tap and water-using appliance, read the meter, then leave it alone and read it again an hour later. If the number has moved, you have a leak somewhere on your side of the meter.

Worth knowing: if it turns out to be a concealed leak, which means an underground leak in your private plumbing on your side of the meter, Urban Utilities may remit part of the excess usage charge once it has been repaired. The application needs a plumber’s invoice showing the repair, so keep it. That is real money and plenty of people never claim it because nobody told them it existed.

The early warnings worth acting on

None of these mean disaster today. All of them mean something is changing.

  • Two or more fixtures draining slowly at the same time
  • Gurgling from a drain when you flush the toilet
  • Water pressure that has dropped noticeably
  • A tap that has started dripping and will not stop
  • A hot water system making banging or popping noises
  • Damp patches, or paint bubbling on a wall for no obvious reason
  • A smell around a drain that keeps coming back after cleaning

What to do while you wait for a plumber

If something is actively leaking, turn the water off at the meter. If it is only one fixture and it has its own isolation valve, turn that off instead so the rest of the house keeps working. If water is anywhere near electrical fittings, turn the power off at the switchboard and do not touch anything.

Then call. It is far easier for us to talk you through the next twenty minutes on the phone than to guess at it afterwards.

When to stop and call someone

Plunging a toilet or clearing hair out of a shower waste is fine. Beyond that, it is worth knowing that in Queensland most plumbing and drainage work is regulated under the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018 and legally has to be carried out by a licensed plumber or drainer. That is not red tape for its own sake. Poorly done drainage and gas work is how contamination and carbon monoxide problems start.

If you have a recurring blockage, a leak you cannot find, or anything to do with gas, that is the point to stop.

We handle general plumbing repairs and maintenance for homes and businesses across Brisbane, and if something has already gone wrong we can usually be there the same day. If you suspect a hidden leak, finding concealed water leaks without digging up the yard is a specific job we do a lot of. Call 0487 037 290.
