Gas Done Right, With the Paperwork to Prove It

A faint whiff near the cooktop. A hotplate that lights with a bang. A new oven still in its box because the fitting underneath it is the wrong one. Gas jobs look small until they are not, and the difference is almost always in how the work was done rather than what was bought.

Gas is no place for a roll of thread tape and a hopeful attitude. Every gas installation in Queensland has to comply with AS/NZS 5601.1, and the work sits under the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004 along with the Petroleum and Gas (Safety) Regulation 2018. That covers pipe sizing, ventilation, clearances around the appliance and a pressure test on the line before it is handed back to you. When the job is finished, a gas compliance certificate is issued for it. Keep that certificate, and if nobody offers you one, ask.

We treat all of that as the floor, not the sales pitch.

What sits on top of it is the part you actually notice. You get an upfront fixed price before a spanner comes out, a $0 call-out fee* to get us there, no weekend rates if the cooktop dies on a Saturday, and our Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee on what we install. Plumbing work is carried out under QBCC licence 15578913. When a job crosses into water, like a gas hot water changeover, it is handled by the same crew as our licensed hot water plumbers servicing Brisbane, so you are not booking two trades and hoping they talk to each other.

Most calls are one of a handful of jobs. Connecting a new cooktop or oven. Running a point out to the BBQ. Swapping an appliance from electric across to gas. Chasing down a smell nobody can place. What moves the price is rarely the appliance itself: it is how far the gas has to travel, whether the existing line can carry one more thing, and what the meter is able to supply. We work that out on site and tell you before you commit. One team, one price, and a gas line you can stop thinking about.

Not every gas job is a straight swap. An older Brisbane house often has a line sized for one appliance and a copper run somebody has already extended twice, so adding a cooktop can mean upsizing pipework back towards the meter. Bottled LPG and reticulated natural gas are not interchangeable either: an appliance needs the right injectors and the right test point pressure for the gas it is actually burning. Units and townhouses bring body corporate approval, shared risers, and a flue that has to terminate where the rules allow rather than where it is convenient.

Commercial kitchens add bigger loads, several appliances on one line and mechanical exhaust to consider as part of the installation rather than afterwards. We look at all of it before quoting, so the number covers the whole job. Taps, toilets and slow drains can ride along on the same visit as general plumbing repairs and maintenance.

Gas Appliances & Points We Install

Most gas work falls into one of six jobs, and each one has its own quirks around pipe sizing, clearances and ventilation. Knowing which one you are booking makes it much easier to compare what you are being quoted.

Cooktops & Ovens

New appliance connected, the old one disconnected and capped off, and burner pressures checked before we leave the kitchen.

Gas Hot Water

Storage and continuous flow units connected, flued and pressure tested, whether it is a new install or a like-for-like swap.

Space Heaters

Flued and unflued heaters fitted with the clearances and room ventilation the standard asks for, not the ones the furniture allows.

Outdoor & BBQ Points

A bayonet point run out to the patio or the outdoor bench, so the bottle swap halfway through cooking is over.

Pool & Spa Heating

Gas heaters sized to the volume of water they have to lift, on a line that can genuinely carry the load.

Commercial Appliances

Cafe and restaurant cooktops, fryers, woks and water heaters, sized around the load the kitchen carries at its busiest.

Our Gas Fitting Services

Fast response, an honest quote in writing, and a lifetime guarantee behind the gas work itself.

Six jobs cover very nearly everything we get called out for on gas, from a single appliance connection through to a full run of new pipework. The approach is the same on all of them. We look first, put one fixed price in writing, do the work, then leave you with the paperwork that shows it complies.

Gas Appliance Installation

Cooktops, ovens, heaters and hot water units connected, commissioned and left working, with the old appliance taken away.

Gas Leak Detection

We trace the smell back to the joint, fitting or appliance behind it, then make the line safe before repairing it.

New Gas Points

A new bayonet or appliance point run from the meter, sized so everything else on the line still runs properly.

Appliance Changeovers

Electric across to gas, or natural gas across to LPG. Different injectors, different pressures, and pipework that has to suit.

Gas Line Repairs

Corroded copper, failed joints and lines caught by a shovel. Repaired, pressure tested and put back into service.

Gas Compliance Testing

Pressure and leak testing at the end of the job, with a gas compliance certificate issued for your records.

Call Vanguard Plumbing & Gas and we will get a plumber out to you for a $0 call out fee*. We will check the appliance and the line feeding it, then give you one fixed price before anything starts.

Signs You Have a Gas Problem

Gas almost always warns you before it turns serious, and the warnings are the easy kind to talk yourself out of. A smell that comes and goes. A burner that will not settle. A headache that lifts the moment somebody opens a window. Any one of them is worth a phone call.

If any of that sounds like your place, do not sit on it. Gas faults never improve on their own, and the small ones are cheap to deal with while they are still small. Tell us what you are noticing and book a plumber today.

Common Gas Problems We Get Called For

The symptom you notice and the fault behind it are rarely the same thing. These are the six causes we find most often once the appliance is off the wall and the line is sitting under test pressure.

Failed Joint Seals

Fittings and thread sealant that have dried out or shifted with the pipework, letting gas past under normal working pressure.

Undersized Pipework

One line asked to feed appliances it was never sized for, so pressure drops away the moment two of them run.

Corroded Copper

Buried or rendered-in pipe eaten away from the outside, usually where it passes through a wall or sits in wet ground.

Blocked Injectors

Dust, spider webs and cooking grease narrowing the jet, so the appliance runs rich and starts leaving soot behind.

Wrong Gas Conversion

An LPG appliance running on natural gas, or the reverse, with nobody changing the injectors or the regulator to match.

Starved of Air

A heater or cooktop boxed into a space with no air path, so it cannot burn cleanly no matter how new it is.

Why Gas Appliances Are Worth Servicing

Gas appliances fail quietly. Burners clog, seals harden, flues collect debris and the flame drifts from blue towards yellow while nobody is watching. A check every year or two catches all of that while it is still a clean and a small part, and it is the cheapest way to keep a heater out of trouble before winter arrives.

Homes, Cafes & Commercial Kitchens

A kitchen cooktop and a restaurant wok burner are the same trade and a different job. Houses are single appliances, short runs and a meter with room to spare. Commercial sites bring heavier loads, several appliances on one line, exhaust requirements and downtime that costs money. We will say which rules apply at your site before pricing the job.

How a Gas Fitting Job Runs

No guessing about what happens once you ring. Six steps, in the same order every time, so you know what has been checked, what it is going to cost and what you get handed at the end of it.

1. You Call

Tell us the appliance, the gas type and what it is doing. You get an arrival window, not a whole day.

2. We Assess

We check the appliance, the line feeding it and what the meter can supply, before anyone talks about price.

3. One Written Price

Options where there are options, a recommendation, and a single number in writing. Getting to that point costs you $0.

4. The Work Gets Done

Pipework run or repaired, the appliance connected and commissioned, and the old unit taken away with us.

5. Test & Demonstrate

We pressure test the line, check how the burners are running, and show you how the appliance is meant to work.

6. Certificate & Guarantee

You get the gas compliance certificate for the work, plus our Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee on what we did.

FAQs

Gas Fitting Questions We Get Asked All the Time

The things people ask us most often on gas jobs, including the one that matters most at three in the morning. Not seeing yours? Call 0487 037 290 and ask.

What is a gas compliance certificate and do I need one?

It is the document that records a gas installation as complying with AS/NZS 5601.1, and one is issued once the gas work is complete. Keep it somewhere you can find it. It matters when you sell the property, when you insure it, and when the next person works on that appliance. If gas work is done at your place and nobody hands you a certificate, ask for it before you pay the invoice.

Do not light anything and do not touch switches, power points or appliances. Open doors and windows, turn the gas off at the meter or the bottle if you can reach it safely, and get everyone outside. If the smell is strong, you can hear gas escaping, or anyone feels unwell, leave the building and ring the emergency number on your gas bill or your gas provider straight away rather than waiting for us. Once you are safe, call 0487 037 290.

Usually yes, provided there is gas at the property or somewhere sensible for a bottle. It means running a new line to the kitchen, sizing it so the rest of the house still works properly, and cutting the bench to suit the new appliance. The old electrical circuit gets made safe as well. We check what is already there before quoting, because the run and the meter capacity decide the price far more than the cooktop does.

For cooking and for hot water, gas is usually cheaper to run than electric resistance heating, and it keeps working during a blackout. Heat pumps have narrowed that gap on the hot water side. We will not quote you a saving figure, because it depends on your tariff, your usage and what you are replacing. What we will do is tell you honestly whether the changeover is worth the install cost at your place.

It depends on what is being connected. A straight appliance swap onto a point that already exists is usually a short visit. Running a new line across a house, shifting an appliance position or converting a unit from one gas type to another takes longer, and a commercial kitchen can stretch across more than one day. You get a realistic duration along with the fixed price, so you can plan the day around it.

Yes. A bayonet point on the patio or beside an outdoor bench means no more swapping bottles halfway through cooking. We run the line from the meter, size it so the cooktop and the hot water are not starved while the BBQ is going, then pressure test the whole installation. A gas compliance certificate covers the new point the same as any other gas work.

There is no honest single answer, because a connection onto an existing point and a new line across a house are different jobs. What we can promise is how the number reaches you. We look at the appliance and the pipework on site, then put one fixed price in writing. The call-out to get that far is $0*, and the price we quote is the price you pay.

Is it the appliance or the gas line?

Describe what you are smelling, hearing or seeing and you will get a straight read over the phone. If it sounds urgent, we will say so.
