Burst Water Pipe Repairs in Brisbane

Water going everywhere? We will talk you through shutting it off, then find the break and repair the pipe.

Burst Pipe Repairs

Stop the Water, Then Fix the Pipe Properly

A burst pipe does not give you a warning and it does not wait. One minute the laundry floor is dry, the next there is water running under the skirting boards, the meter is spinning, and you are standing in it trying to remember which tap shuts the house down.

So that is where we start. Your water meter sits in a box near the front boundary, and next to it is a tap that isolates the whole property. Turn it clockwise until it stops and the water stops with it. That one move buys you time. Then call 0487 037 290, tell us what you can see, and we will keep talking you through it while someone is on the way.

It helps to know what you are actually dealing with, because a burst and a slow leak are different jobs. A burst gives you water you can see, pressure that falls away and often a noise in the wall. A weep gives you a bill that climbs and a patch of lawn that never dries, and that is a job for finding concealed water leaks rather than an emergency repair. Where the break sits matters too. Urban Utilities looks after the water infrastructure outside your property boundary and you own everything inside it, so a main letting go in the street is not your bill.

Once the water is off, the real question is repair or replace. A single split in sound copper is a cut-out and a joint. A galvanised line that has rusted through in one spot is thin everywhere else, and replacing the run costs less than paying four times for the same repair. You get both options with a price against each, in writing, and the call-out to get to that point is $0.

Water repairs are regulated work, so the joint gets made to standard rather than made to stop dripping. QBCC licence 15578913 sits behind it, along with our Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee. No subbies, no surprise bills. Water off, pipe repaired, and an invoice you can hand to your insurer.

Not every burst is somewhere convenient. A split in exposed pipe under the house is a straightforward fix. The same split under a concrete slab, inside a wall cavity or beneath a paved driveway is a different job, because the repair is the easy part and getting to it is not. We work out access before we quote, so nothing gets opened up on a guess.

Units and townhouses add a layer. The isolation valve can sit in a common area or a shared meter bank, and body corporate approval comes into it once the pipe leaves your own walls. Older Queenslanders bring the opposite problem: pipe from four different decades joined end to end, so the material changes halfway along the run. If it has already let go and cannot wait until morning, our 24/7 emergency plumbers in Brisbane can get to you.

Pipe Types We Repair & Why They Fail

Brisbane houses carry a mix of pipe from every era of plumbing, and each material fails in its own way. Knowing what you have tells you whether a burst is a one-off split or the first of several.

Copper Pipe

Splits at joints and pinholes where water sits still. Long lasting, but thin walls and acidic water eventually tell on it.

Galvanised Steel

Rusts from the inside out until the wall gives way. Once one section bursts, the rest of the run is usually close behind.

Poly Pipe

Common on water services and irrigation. Fails at compression fittings, or where a shovel, a mower or ground movement has worked on it.

PVC Pipe

Rigid and cheap, and it cracks rather than splits. Ground movement and impact from digging are what usually break it.

Pex Pipe

Flexible and used in most newer homes. Rarely bursts along the pipe, so look at the crimped fittings and unsupported runs.

Old Cast Iron

Still in the ground under plenty of older Brisbane properties. Corrodes, scales up and cracks, and it is rarely worth patching twice.

Our Burst Pipe Services

An honest quote before we cut anything, a fast response when it lets go, and lifetime workmanship.

A burst pipe job is rarely just the burst. There is the isolation, the digging or the wall opening, the repair itself, and the pressure test afterwards to prove it holds. These six things cover what we actually do on a burst pipe call, on houses and on commercial sites, all at one fixed price.

Emergency Isolation

We get the water shut off at the meter or the nearest valve, so the damage stops before the repair even starts.

Pinpointing the Break

Working out exactly where the pipe has gone before anything is opened up, so we cut once instead of guessing twice.

Burst Pipe Repair

Cutting out the failed section and jointing in new pipe, in copper, Pex, poly or PVC, to suit what is already there.

Pipe Replacement

Where a run has failed more than once, we replace the length rather than keep patching a pipe that is finished.

Water Service Renewal

Replacing the service line between your meter and the house, which is the pipe that costs the most when it leaks unseen.

Pressure Test & Report

We test the repair under pressure and write up what failed, which is the kind of report a claim usually needs.

Signs a Pipe Is About to Burst

Some pipes go without warning, but most give you a few weeks of hints first. Pressure that is not what it was, marks appearing where they should not be, and sounds in the wall when every tap is off. Here is what tends to show up before the pipe actually lets go.

Any one of those on its own might be nothing. Two or three together usually means a pipe is already failing somewhere you cannot see it, and waiting only makes the repair bigger. Tell us what you are noticing and request a call back before it turns into a flooded floor.

Common Causes of Burst Pipes in Brisbane

A pipe does not burst for no reason. Something has been working on it, usually for years. These are the six causes behind most of the burst pipe calls we get across Brisbane, and what each one tends to leave behind.

Ground Movement

Brisbane clay swells in the wet and shrinks in the dry. The pipe flexes every season until a joint or a rigid run cracks.

Tree Roots

Roots follow moisture and wrap around a pipe, then thicken. The squeeze crushes older pipe and levers joints apart until one lets go.

Corrosion & Age

Galvanised and cast iron rust from the inside until the wall is paper thin. The pipe holds until pressure finds the weakest spot.

High Water Pressure

Mains pressure above what the pipework was built for stresses every joint. A failed or missing pressure limiting valve is often behind it.

Impact From Digging

A post hole, a new garden bed or a retaining wall. Pipe nicked by a shovel or an auger often fails weeks later.

Poor Original Workmanship

Unsupported runs, mixed metals joined directly, or a fitting never done up properly. It holds for years, then fails at the weak point.

Stop the Next One Before It Happens

Most bursts give warning if someone is looking. A pressure check tells you whether your pipework is being pushed harder than it was built for, and a pressure limiting valve fixes that cheaply. While we are on site we look at the rest of the run, the fittings and the water service, and tell you what is next in line.

Burst Pipes in Homes & Businesses

A house can go without water for an hour. A cafe, a childcare centre or a warehouse usually cannot, and the cost of a wet floor is measured in lost trade as well as repairs. We do both. On commercial sites we isolate the smallest section possible and keep the rest of the building running.

How a Burst Pipe Job Runs

From the phone call to the paperwork, a burst pipe repair follows the same six steps every time. Knowing the order helps, because the first two happen before we even arrive and you can start step one yourself.

1. You Call

Tell us what you can see and how fast the water is coming out. You get an arrival window you can plan around.

2. Water Off

We talk you through shutting the meter tap while we are on the way, or do it the moment we get there.

3. Find the Break

We trace the run and narrow the burst to one section, so only the ground that has to open gets opened.

4. Fixed Price in Writing

Repair or replace, with a price for each where both are possible. Nothing is cut until you have said yes to a number.

5. Repair & Pressure Test

New pipe in, system charged back up, and the joint held under pressure while we watch it, before anything gets backfilled.

6. Report & Guarantee

You get an invoice describing what failed and what we did, and the repair is covered by our Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee.

Book Your Burst Pipe Repair Today

FAQs

Burst Water Pipe Questions We Get Asked All the Time

The things people ask us while the water is still off, answered properly. If yours is not covered here, call 0487 037 290 and ask.

How do I turn the water off at the meter?

Go to the water meter, usually in a box near the front boundary or the footpath. Lift the lid and find the tap on the house side of the meter, sometimes a lever, sometimes a round handle. Turn it clockwise until it will not go further. Open the lowest tap in the house to drain the pressure out of the pipes, then check the meter dial has stopped moving. If the tap is seized, do not force it, call us.

Age and corrosion first, especially galvanised steel and old cast iron that rust from the inside out. After that it is ground movement in Brisbane’s clay soils, tree roots squeezing a pipe over years, mains pressure higher than the pipework was built for, and damage from digging. Freezing is not really a factor here, which is why most Brisbane bursts trace back to the pipe itself rather than the weather.

Policies differ, so the honest answer is to check yours or ask your insurer. Broadly, home policies often deal with the water damage a burst causes separately from the failed pipe itself, and some kinds of damage may not be covered at all. We cannot tell you what your policy will pay. What we can do is give you an invoice describing what failed, what we repaired and when, because insurers usually want a plumber’s report. Keep it with your claim.

Same-day service is guaranteed, and if we do not get to you that day $65 comes off the job. When you ring, tell us how much water is coming out and whether you have managed to shut the meter tap off, because that decides where you sit in the run. If it is the middle of the night and it cannot wait, say so on the phone and we will tell you straight away what we can do.

Repair when the pipe is otherwise sound and the failure is one clean split, which is common in copper and Pex. Replace when the material is the problem: galvanised steel or old cast iron that has rusted through in one place is almost always thin everywhere else. We show you the section we cut out so you can see which it is, and we price both where both are genuinely options.

Urban Utilities is responsible for the water infrastructure outside your property boundary, and you are responsible for the pipework inside it. So a main letting go in the street or a fault at the meter connection is their job, not your bill, and you can report it on 13 23 64. Everything from the meter into the house is yours, and that is where we come in. Not sure which side of the line it is on? Ring us and we will tell you.

Rarely the whole yard. Once we know roughly where the water is coming out, we open a small access hole and work from there, and we backfill and level it before we leave. Under a slab or a driveway there is often the option of rerouting the run instead of breaking through it. If a hidden leak has been pushing your bill up, ask us about the Urban Utilities concealed leak remission, because your plumber’s invoice is part of that application.
