5 Signs Your Drains Need Professional Cleaning

Almost nobody calls a plumber about a drain until it has already stopped working. The frustrating part is that drains rarely fail without warning. They give you a few weeks of small hints first, and if you catch those, you are dealing with a routine clean instead of an emergency and a flooded laundry.

Here are the five signs worth acting on.

1. More than one fixture is draining slowly

One slow sink is usually a local problem, often hair or soap build-up in the trap right under the basin. That is a small job.

Two or more slow fixtures at the same time is a different story. When the shower, the basin and the toilet all slow down together, the blockage is not under any one of them. It is further down the line where everything joins, and it is only going to get worse. This is the single most useful early warning there is, and it is the one people most often ignore.

2. Gurgling from the drains or the toilet

That gurgle is air being pulled through water because it cannot get through the pipe the normal way. Flush the toilet and listen to the shower drain. If it burbles back at you, the two are connected by a line that is partially blocked.

3. A smell you cannot place

A drain that is flowing properly does not smell. When waste sits still in a partially blocked line it starts to break down, and that smell comes back up through the nearest opening. If a bathroom or a kitchen has developed a faint sulphur or sewage smell that keeps returning after you have cleaned everything, the problem is in the pipe, not the room.

4. Water coming back up

Water rising in the shower when you flush, or backing up into a floor waste or an outdoor gully, means the line is close to fully blocked. At this point you are no longer preventing a problem, you are managing one. Stop using the fixtures on that line and get someone out, because the next flush has nowhere to go but your floor.

5. It keeps coming back

If you have plunged, poured something down it, or had it cleared before and it blocked again within a few months, the blockage is a symptom rather than the cause. Recurring blockages usually mean something structural: tree roots that have found a joint, a section of pipe that has sagged and now holds water, or a crack letting soil in. Clearing it again will buy you another few months and no more.

What actually causes this in Brisbane

Three things account for most of the drain work we do.

Tree roots. Roots go looking for water and older clay pipes with rubber-ring joints give them somewhere to get in. Once a root is established it acts like a net, catching everything that goes past it.

Fat and grease. It goes down the sink warm and liquid, then cools and sets on the pipe wall a few metres along. It narrows the pipe gradually, which is why kitchen drains tend to fail slowly rather than suddenly.

Old pipework. Plenty of Brisbane homes still have original clay or earthenware drainage. It does not fail because anyone did anything wrong. It fails because it has been in the ground for decades and the ground moves.

Is the blockage even yours to fix?

Worth knowing before you call anyone. In Brisbane, Urban Utilities is responsible for the sewer infrastructure outside your property boundary. Anything on your side of that boundary is the property owner’s responsibility.

So if the problem is out in the street, that is a call to Urban Utilities on 13 23 64 and it does not cost you anything. If it is inside your boundary, which is most of the time, it is a job for a licensed plumber. If you are not sure which it is, that is exactly what a camera inspection settles.

Why we put a camera down first

Clearing a drain without looking at it tells you nothing about why it blocked. You get flow back, everyone is happy, and it blocks again in autumn.

Running a CCTV camera down the line shows whether you are dealing with a one-off build-up or something structural like a root intrusion or a collapsed section. That changes the fix completely. A build-up needs a clean. A cracked or root-invaded section usually needs no-dig pipe relining in Brisbane, which repairs the pipe from the inside without digging up the yard to get at it.

Either way you see the footage before anyone quotes you, so you are deciding on evidence rather than on a plumber’s word.

Do not wait for it to block completely

A slow drain is cheap. A blocked sewer on a Sunday with waste backing up into the shower is not, and it usually takes a carpet with it.
